Darina is flavour of the month at food fest

Ireland’s culinary queen Darina Allen has been feted in Kerry for her lifetime contribution to the Irish food industry.

She received the prestigious lifetime achievement award at Listowel Food Fair with the presentation made by festival chairman Jimmy Deenihan.

Darina Allen started giving cookery courses in the 1960’s at Ballymaloe House, which was later developed Ballymaloe Cookery School. She often claimed that she was inspired to pursue cooking through her own mother and her mother-in-law, Irish Michelin award winner, the late Myrtle Allen.

Darina has firmly cemented her position as a leading chef, TV presenter and food author and she became host to RTÉ’s hugely popular cookery show Simply Delicious.

Darina has published several successful culinary books on the topic of Irish food with easy but delicious recipes to follow that people really enjoy.  

Meanwhile, the overall winner of the 2023 Best Emerging Artisan Food Awards, in association with Kerry Local Enterprise Office announced at the festival and the Best Emerging Artisan Food Award was ÉaLú Foods in Dingle, owned by Kallam Moriarty, for their chocolate bon bon product.

There were five categories in the competition and the other winners were:

Baking and Baked Goods: Sourdough bread from Christine Purcell’s  Cookie Crumble Bakery in Listowel.

Free From: Miso sesame tofu from OTOFU by Méabh Mooney, Kilbrittain, Co Cork.

Dairy: Farmhouse cheese fenugreek by Norma Dineen from Bó Rua Farm, Fermoy, Co Cor

Condiments: Peach chutney from Trusted Friend by Peter Hinchcliff.
