Dancing at the crossroads for Ian

GAME for a laugh Stephen O’Donoghue, Derry Healy, Rosie Healy and Kevin O’Riordan are getting into the swing of things for this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on Saturday, July 7.

In support of the Ian O’Connell Trust, musicians Derry and Rosie, from Glenflesk GAA Club, will drop their bikes at the Black Shop in Castlecove and play a few lively tunes for the a Ceilí Beag.

They are partaking in a special vintage tour of the Ring and, as well as dusting down vintage bikes, high Nellies, choppers and touring bikes, they are hoping that cyclists will join in the craic and participate in a dancing at the crossroads session to make what is always a wonderful day out that little bit extra special.

Cyclists will be supporting Ian’s rehabilitation costly programme as he recovers from the serious injuries he sustained in a fall from his bike while cycling with friends in the Muckross area of Killarney National Park.

Now in its 35th year and the country’s biggest single-day fundraising event, last year’s cycle raised a whopping €1.5 million for the chosen causes.

For operational and health and safety reasons, the number of cyclists participating has been capped at 10,000 and while places are very limited, some are still available via www.ringofkerrycycle.ie

The organising committee is chaired by Kenmare hotelier Tony Daly and the event involved an enormous effort by close on 1,500 volunteers, including first aid personnel and medics, cycle repair crews, marshals, support vehicles and feeding station personnel.
