Dad of five dies on farm

logoA POPULAR father-of-five lost his life in a freak accident as he worked on his family farm in Currow on Wednesday.

It is understood that Ted Brosnan from Kilsarcon, who was in his late 50s, died when steel shuttering he was working with collapsed and he suffered fatal injuries.

Gardaí from Castleisland attended the scene and the Health and Safety Authority is investigating the cause and circumstances of the tragic accident.

It was the seventh workplace death in the country since the start of the year.

Mr Brosnan, a quietly-spoken and well-known dairy farmer and contractor, also made himself available for shuttering work on occasions.

It is understood he was lifting heavy steel shutters on the farm when the accident occurred shortly after 11am.

Mr Brosnan and his wife, Mary, have five grown-up children, Catherine, Maria, Christina, Damien and Timmy.

He is further survived by his grandchildren Shane and Karla, brothers John and Patrick and sister Bridie Drumm.

A spokesman for the Kerry IFA, of which Mr Brosnan was a lifelong member and former branch official, said it was with deep sorrow that the organisation learned of what had happened.

“It was very unfortunate. Farming and contracting was his life and he was a very hard worker,” the spokesman said.

Mr Brosnan will be reposing at his residence in Kilsarcon on Saturday from 5-9pm with Requiem Mass on Sunday at 10am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Currow, with burial after in Kilsarcon Cemetery.
