GARDAI have closed off Banna Beach to the public on health and safety grounds.
They have confirmed that the action is due to the large number of people congregating in the area, leading to concerns about the possible spread of Covid-19.
An Garda Síochána have encouraged people to implement proper social distancing by finding outdoor locations that are not busy.
Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised about public safety in some areas of the national park in Killarney where crowds of people have been congregating all weekend.
Photographs have been shared on social media showing queues of vehicles waiting to gain access to the park, particularly around Muckross and Dinis, with one local observer commenting that it was similar to a bank holiday weekend.
“I saw groups of people walking on narrow footpaths where social distancing was impossible to observe,” one local said.
While locals are out in force, people from all parts of Munster and further afield have been arriving in Killarney on day trips and having picnics in the national park, in very close proximity to other groups of people.
