Cronin stops his opponent in the third round

Kevin Cronin’s message on Twitter after the bout

The Kingdom Warrior has earned himself shot at an Irish title.

Brilliant Kevin Cronin made the switch to the super middleweight division a successful one when he defeated Nicaragua’s Santos Madreno in the Parochial Hall in Cork last night.

The Milltown man, roared on by a huge travelling army from Kerry, produced a power-packed performance to earn a third round stoppage in a planned six-round bout against his Spain-based opponent.

He is now expected to be granted a dream match with Celtic champion Craig McCarthy for a shot at a national title.

McCarthy was at last night’s showdown and entered the ring afterwards to congratulate Cronin.

The Kingdom Warrior (26) out-boxed and out-moved Madreno on the night and he simply had too much power, guile and a far superior reach for his veteran opponent to contend with.

Cronin said on Twitter afterwards: “Job done. That atmosphere – Kerry took over. Now time for me to get my title”.
