A series of health and wellbeing information evenings, focusing on topics such as breast and prostate cancer and issues like gambling and loneliness, is being planned by Dr Crokes GAA Club and the meetings will be open to everybody.
The first gathering, on this Monday, April 17, will deal with breast cancer and the impact is can have on those diagnosed and their families.
Other issues on the agenda in the coming weeks will be coping with being alone (April 24), Gambling (May 1) and Prostate Cancer (May 8) and all events will be held in the Dr Crokes clubhouse on Lewis Road (V93K 585).
Statistics show that 3,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Ireland and 700 die while 3,940 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and two out of three will die unless it is diagnosed early.
Alone Ireland’s national survey 2022 revealed that one in 10 people had not been out socially last year and, at the talks, an expert will show how assistive technology helps people live comfortably alone.
Meanwhile, results of an extensive scientific survey of inter county GAA players revealed that 79,5 per of the inter-county players bet and this develops into problem addictive gambling for 4.6 per cent of players.
The series of talks will feature guest speakers telling their stories on their journeys from initial shock to recovery and how they cope.
Meanwhile, the Dr Crokes club is also organising free of charge physical activity for older people – men and women – on Tuesdays at 11.00am with exercise sessions scheduled for April 18, and 25 and May 2 and 9.
The sessions will involve gentle exercises to increase mobility and they will be led by a qualified instructor. Enquiries to Kathleen on 085-8179171.
