CHAMPIONS Dr Crokes got off to a great start in their bid to retain their Kerry SFC title when they registered an emphatic 2-14 to 0-9 victory over Mid Kerry this Sunday afternoon, the goals coming from now retired inter-county stars Colm Cooper and Kieran O’Leary.
But town rivals Legion will have to do it all again against Kenmare Shamrocks after they finished level, 0-15 to 1-12 at Derreen.
It was a bad day for Kilcummin who lost out to St Brendan’s on a 2-17 to 2-14 scoreline while not even the late introduction of David Clifford could save East Kerry who lost by two points, 1-12 to 1-10 to Rathmore, despite a great performance from Dara Roche.
In a result that surprised many, particularly given their recent form, Kerins O’Rahillys overcame South Kerry in a great game, winning with four points to spare, 2-16 to 2-12, at the end of a pulsating tie.
Feale Rangers fought off West Kerry 1-13 to 0-12, Dingle were far too strong for the Kenmare divisional side, winning 2-16 to 2-4 and Austin Stacks and St Kierans finished all square, 0-16 to 1-13.
The draw for round two has now been made and it pitches Crokes against St Brendan’s while Legion, if they manage to overcome Kenmare in the replay, will play the winners of the Austin Stacks and St Kierans clash while, if Legion are beaten by Kenmare Shanrocks, they will play the Kenmare District Board team.
The full draw for round two is as follows:
