Criminality the culprits probably thought was funny

A KILLARNEY councillor, who is also a dedicated tidy towns volunteer, has described as appalling the vandalism of two feature Killarney street sculptures at the weekend.

KillarneyToday.com highlighted the damage to the antler of the landmark deer monument on Port Road and, late last night, the attack on the new monk sculpture on Est Avenue Road which saw a hand carved quill depicting the legendary Annals of Innisfallen mindlessly snapped off and taken.

Cllr Michael Gleeson said it is beyond comprehension that two special works of creative genius in Killarney have been damaged.

“What is even more difficult to understand is that most likely the person[s] involved thought at the time of their criminality that what they were doing was funny.

“I feel very sad that some person[s] is so maliciously minded that they get some form of vicarious pleasure from destroying beauty,” he said.

Cllr Gleeson asked those involved in the dastardly deeds to seek professional help for their “terrible illness”.

In a direct message to the perpetrators, Cllr Gleeson said: “Killarney is a town begotten of the beauty of creation and committed to its preservation and enhancement.

“Killarney is resilient and it will recover and renew. I hope that you will also but you need professional help to do so”.
