A Covid-19 vaccine spring booster is being rolled out for people over the age of 80, those over five years of age who have a weak immune system or older persons living in residential care facilities.
Cork Kerry Community Healthcare is asking eligible people to avail of the free vaccination which is now available from GPs or local pharmacies.
Vaccination teams will also provide the vaccine for people living in residential care facilities, including nursing homes and individuals who are housebound.
Public Health Medicine specialist, Dr Michael Hanrahan, said evidence shows that people’s immunity from the COVID-19 vaccine weakens over time, therefore there is a need to ensure that older and vulnerable people continue to top up their protection.
“Covid-19 still causes severe illnesses and deaths worldwide,’” he stressed.
“Vaccines are proven to be the best protection against serious illness from Covid-19”.
Those aged 70 to 79 can also request a vaccine and they should talk to their GP or pharmacist about their reasons for wanting a booster.
