They didn’t exactly need to say ‘I do’ once again but it was a special ceremony nevertheless as several couples from Glenflesk Parish gathered to celebrate milestone anniversaries of their wedding days.

They were invited by Glenflesk Parish Priest, Fr Jim Lenihan, to the special occasion in St Agatha’s Church on Saturday evening where Mass was celebrated and they renewed their marriage vows while holding a crucifix, the symbol of sacrificial love and blessing.

Fr Jim explained that while the crucifix is mainly associated with Good Friday for the suffering endured by Jesus or it is linked with the season of Lent, on closer examination the cross is the greatest symbol of love there could possibly be.

It was a wonderful night in particular for Gerald and Eileen Doherty who were celebrating their 60h anniversary while Jackie and Peggy O’Sullivan, Eddie and Theresa Moynihan and Joe and Maureen Donovan were celebrating 55 years as husband and wife.

Donie and Joan Moynihan and Paddy and Mary Casey celebrated 53 years of marriage while the golden jubilee couples marking 50 years were Pat and Mary O’Mahony, Patrick and Eileen Doyle and Seán and Kathleen Counihan.

Some of the couples marked their anniversaries during the Covid lockdowns but they celebrated properly in Glenflesk on Saturday and the Mass was concelebrated by Fr John O’Donoghue.
