THERE have been 12 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Killarney urban area and a further eight infections in the rural area, official Department of Health figures confirm.

Tralee is the worst blackspot for the virus with 76 cases reported in the rural area and a further 18 in the town itself.

There have been 25 confirmed cases in Caherciveen but in all the other main urban areas of the county – including Kenmare, Killorglin, Dingle, Listowel and Castleisland – the number of diagnosed cases in each was less than five.

Although the Health Service Executive indicated that two additional cases of Covid-19 had been confirmed at University Hospital Kerry on Tuesday, the figures have still not been included in statistics published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

According to the Department of Health run agency, the number of confirmed cases in Kerry remains at 308 which has not increased since May 19.

It is now expected that the two news cases reported by the HSE will be factored into tomorrow’s national summary.

Nationally, today, four additional coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,714.

A further 16 new cases of infection were confirmed and, following the denitrification of two previously reported cases, the number of people who have contracted the virus in the Republic of Ireland now stands at 25,355.

The National Public Health Emergency Team met today and noted that approximately half of those diagnosed with Covid-19 in the community take more than two days from the onset of symptoms to make contact with their GP.

“The most important actions anyone can take from the moment they experience symptoms are to self-isolate immediately, restrict the movement of household contacts and make phone contact with their GP,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.
