Countess Road crossing could be funded in 2020

Cllr Brendan Cronin: Pedestrian crossing sought

A NEW pedestrian crossing, to improve safety for people living or visiting three busy residential areas in Killarney, is in the pipeline – but it will be at least 2020 before it can be delivered.

Cllr Brendan Cronin has highlighted the need for a tabletop crossing on Countess Road for the benefit and safety of residents living in Countess Grove, Muckross View and Dromhale Close and he stressed that the area is very particularly busy with people accessing three estates.

Kerry County Council said officials are currently engaged in discussions with landowners to set back their walls in order to allow for the possible construction of a footpath and tabletop pedestrian crossing at the location.

Subject to agreement being secured, the Killarney Municipal District Council will prepare a design and begin a Section 38 planning process.

“The project would then be considered for funding for the Safety Improvement Works Scheme 2020,” an official said.

Cllr Cronin said it is disappointing that it will take that long considering that it is a matter of public safety.
