Colour on the streets for 4th of July celebrations

Strains of the Star-Spangled Banner and Amhrán na bhfann rang out over the streets of Killarney this afternoon as the town celebrated its long links with the United States of America on Independence Day.

There was great colour and excitement as the flags of the various US states were unfurled and he tri-colour and the US flags were flown from the balcony of the town hall.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin and Municipal District Officer, Matthew Farrell officiated and the talented O’Leary brothers – collectively known as The Three O’s – delivered renditions of both anthems.

Cowboys and can-can girls roamed the streets and guests of honour were some of the star players and coaches of American football side Georgia Tech, including Castleisland native and star kicker David Shanahan.

The 4th of July festivities will continue long into the night with the spectacular parade planned for 7.00pm and that will feature magnificent floats, marching bands, Disney characters, cheerleaders, motorcyclists, cowboys and saloon gals.

A DJ has been lined up for a beat on the street style celebration once the parade concludes.
