
AFTER an eventful year during which they completed first aid courses, learned sign language, received FAI coaching certificates, won major awards and completed a driver safety programme, Transition Year students at Killarney Community College have graduated at a special ceremony in the school.
TY co-ordinator Kerri McCarthy congratulated class of 2018 on their many magnificent achievements throughout the year and some the highlights outlined were the participation in the Apprentice Chef project, making a film with artist and filmmaker Mieke Vanmechelen, completing the Bronze Gaisce President’s Award, attending the National Ploughing Championships and surfing at Inch Beach.
They were also involved in the Business in the Community Programme in association with Marks and Spencer, they completed a public speaking class with Fair City and The Gift actor Alan Devine and learned new photography skills from Killarney photographer Michéal Ó Suilleabháin.

The students were also involved in the Jigsaw programme and they noted the positive impact it has on the school community and the students raised funds for a number of good causes, including Barnardos, Special Olympics, SouthWest Counsellinga nd the Irish Cancer Society.
Special certificates were presented to Karen O’Donoghue who received the Commitment and Dedication Award 2018 and Karolina Gunia who was deemed TY Student of the Year.
“Transition Year in the college was another huge success and each year it is evolving more and more,” said co-ordinator Kerri McCarthy.
“The students are excelling in all areas, both academic and extra-curricular, and this year our TY student Natalia Leane won the All-Ireland Apprentice Chef title,” she added.
The graduation day was attended by students, teachers, parents and others involved who got to celebrate and acknowledge the many achievements and accolades received throughout the year.
