WHILE a number of footballers from Spa GAA Club were preparing to help East Kerry to register a big win in the Kerry senior football championship last Saturday, other club members hosted a fundraising coffee morning in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and the response was phenomenal.
This is the first time the club has hosted an event like this and on the day a whopping €2,500 was raised for the charity’s valuable work in the south west.
Elaine Moynihan approached the club with the fundraising idea and a committee was formed comprising of Health and Wellbeing Officer Margaret Doyle, PRO Deirdre O’Sullivan Darcy and Yvonne Jordan to plan the event.
“Unfortunately, there are so many homes affected by cancer so the idea was to do something to give back to the wonderful staff and the centres that care for patients 24/7 during their treatment,” said PRO Deirdre.
In addition to the coffee morning the club set up a children’s playroom and a TV room to make sure patrons had a chance to watch the Ireland v New Zealand Rugby World Cup match.
A number of businesses in the Kerry and Cork region got on board to sponsor the event and many people brought along some delicious home baking and treats on the morning.
“On behalf on the organisers, we want to say a big thank you to everyone that was part of our coffee morning,” said Deirdre.
“Thanks to all our sponsors and those who baked or gave prizes for the raffle, all those who donated and supported the event, to all our helpers who made it happen and to everyone who came along,” she added.
