WHO needs a gala black tie ball or a hopping nightclub dance floor when you can ring in the new year in comfort – at the top of a mountain as the clock strikes midnight.
That’s exactly the wonderful experience enjoyed by a hardy group of outdoor enthusiasts who scaled Torc mountain that night in order to do so.
Bringing those involved from the couch to the mountain, experienced climber Tony Digby and his team of guided led the way with torched attached to the climbers’ headgear to illuminate the path.
One of those who completed the climb, Angela Kelly, described it as an extraordinary and unique experience.
“To climb a mountain at night is very different and very special,” she said.
“As the weary line of hikers tire and the distance between you and the next person increases, you feel alone with your thoughts, yet safe because your guides aren’t far away and are watching over you,” she said.
