A KILLARNEY architectural practice has been commended in the hugely competitive Architectural Technology Awards for its work on a project in London.
healycornelius design ltd was recognised for its project in Hawley Mews, Camden, London, which consisted of a residential development of three two-bedroom mews houses, delivered on a challenging and confined site of 280m² which is overlooked by neighbours whose rear elevations are a mere seven metres from the site boundaries.
This context presented a challenging design and construction opportunity and each house was carefully detailed and designed to maximise light, space and storage and in keeping with the rigorous sustainable and environmental requirements set by the local authority.
While the nominated project was constructed in London, the design, construction and delivery were co-ordinated remotely from the Killarney studio in the KTI Centre, Deerpark, by regional director and chartered architectural technologist, Michael O’Keeffe and his team comprising Tony Lynch, Robert O’Donovan and Patrick O’Sullivan.
Management and supervision of the construction phase, together with London-based managing director, Niall Healy, required regular trips to the UK for the Killarney team for site inspections and meetings.
The award adjudicators said: “Hawley Mews is a neat and clever site design and layout. The scheme demonstrates the true flexibility of architectural technology with its innovative technical solution – a high quality solution for a constrained site, maximising natural light”.
The judges added: “The evidence of compliance with planning requirements was managed in an innovative and transparent way and with a sensible approach. The fire engineered mist suppression solution, to ensure the safety of occupants, overcomes seemingly impossible site constraints”.
