The Hans Liebherr Road in Killarney will be closed to traffic from 7.00pm this Friday to facilitate badly needed resurfacing works at the Cleeny Roundabout.
The busy junction, which links the main Killarney-Tralee road with Rock Road and Hans Liebherr Road, has been in a deplorable state and it has led to repeated calls from local councillors to have it upgraded.
€40,000 has been allocated for the resurfacing works and, once is closes at 7.00pm, it is hoped to get as much work a possible done overnight/
Decision makers on national road developments have been considering a number of options for the roundabout where a number of accidents – including one fatal incident – have occurred.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) engineers have examined the area to identify the best design to accommodate vehicles while, at the same time, promoting Active Travel initiatives and ensuring greater safety.
A previous meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council heard that TII officials are aware of local concerns about the location, particularly the close proximity of a pedestrian crossing at the exit from the roundabout on to the bypass road.
He said the accident history at the roundabout will be taken into consideration before any new plan is implemented.
The Cleeney roundabout has five exit point, one going on to the main Tralee road, another leading to the bypass, a link with Rock Road and a turn for the Hans Liebherr Road but there is also an entry point and exit to and from a busy shopping area.
