A VERY kind-hearted Rathmore man who requested donations in lieu of flowers at his wife’s funeral has presented a cheque for an impressive €1,650 to the Kerry branch of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Bridie O’Neill from Shinnagh, Rathmore passed away last November as a result of complications associated with Motor Neurone Disease. The much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbour bore her suffering with great dignity and courage.
On her passing her family opted to give something back to the Association and invited donations instead of flowers at her funeral in Rathmore.
The O’Neill family said they wished to particularly thank Katie Kinsella, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association’s specialist nurse, for the care and attention afforded to Bridie during her illness and they are also very grateful to the local medical professionals and back-up services who were always there to help.
“Special mention has to be given to Bridie’s two great friends, Margaret Hickey and Kathleen Kelleher, for their support and kindness down through the years but most especially during Bridie’s final illness,” the family said.
They also thanked the people from Rathmore and the wider Sliabh Luachra area who supported them during a very difficult time and also for donating so generously to the charity.
John O’Neill and his extended family presented the cheque for to Christy Lehane of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association at the Killarney Oaks Hotel.
“I thank John and his family and all those who contributed to this huge cheque presentation. This money will go towards funding a recently created fourth IMNDA specialist nurse to care for our Motor Neurone sufferers,” Christy said.
