AN impressive €4,040 was raised for a very worthy local charity through a card tournament that the organisers never got a chance to finish.
Covid-19 restrictions brought the 31 Drive in aid of Spa GAA clubman Johnny Batt Cronin to a sudden end but the participants had already generated over €4,000 in the earlier rounds.
The Spa stalwart, who passed away last September was remembered by friends, neighbours and club colleagues who wanted to play cards to raise funds for Comfort for Chemo Kerry and the oncology unit at University Hospital Kerry.

Proceeds from the initial rounds of the card drive were presented this week to Mary Fitzgerald from the Comfort for Chemo organiation.
The late Johnny Batt played with Spa during its glory days of the early 1970s. He won seven O’Donoghue Cup medals as a county intermediate medal in 1974 and he was member of the East Kerry divisional side that won the first All-Ireland Club Championship in 1971.
Spa GAA club presented Johnny Batt with a lifetime achievement award – the highest honour possible within the club – four years prior to his sad passing.
