Champs Crokes right on course

Kieran O’Leary: Late goal

CHAMPIONS Dr Crokes had a late surge to finally shake off a hugely stubborn challenge from Sean O’Shea’s Kenmare Shamrocks and, in doing so, they set themselves up for a Kerry SFC semi-final encounter with South Kerry.

Kenmare were right in the game up to the final quarter but they paid a high price for wasted goal chances and, against an experienced and slick side like Crokes, you have to maximise whatever opportunities are presented.

At the end of a thrilling game at Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon, Crokes had registered a 1-20 to 1-12 victory, with sharpshooter Tony Brosnan inflicting most of the damage with nine points and the goal coming deep into added time from Kieran O’Leary.

Fresh from their hugely impressive 1-23 to 1-11 victory over Dingle last night, East Kerry, meanwhile, will meet St Brendan’s Board in the penultimate stages of the championship after Kerry star Diarmuid O’Connor ended Killarney Legion’s Bishop Moynihan Cup aspirations in Tralee on Saturday night.

With James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane impressive in the first half, Legion looked on course for a victory but their game plan went astray on the resumption and a goal from O’Connor proved crucial in a two points win, 1-12 to 1-10.

David and Paudie Clifford destroyed Dingle with the younger of the two Fossa brothers finding the net on his way to a 1-6 haul while Dara Roche impressed with nine points. It was sweet revenge for the divisional side following their loss to the same opposition in a controversial clash last year.

In the other quarter-final South Kerry had a 0-17 to 1-10 win against St Kierans.
