KILLARNEY Celtic FC officials have appealed to all soccer supporters in the county to turn out to support the club’s senior team in one of the biggest games they have ever played this Sunday.
Following their heroics last season, which saw them bow out of the FAI Junior Cup at the semi-final stage, after losing on penalties to eventual champions Sheriff United, they will entertain North End United in a glamour last 16 clash at Celtic Park (2.00pm).
An epic battle is in prospect at Celtic Park as these two stalwarts of Irish junior soccer meet to decide who will progress to the quarter-finals of the biggest knockout tournament in Europe commencing with 600 teams at the outset.
This is just the second time – including last year’s amazing events – that any Kerry team have progressed this far in the competition so there will be huge local interest in the glamour clash on Sunday.
North End United, from Wexford, have been competing in the latter stages of the competition in recent seasons and they will be arriving in Celtic Park on Sunday hot off the heels of a stunning 6-0 victory over Ballymun United.
Killarney Celtic, however, remain undefeated in all competitions this year and they will quietly fancy their chances of progressing to the last eight.
They are hoping that last year’s experience will stand to them in good stead this year and they will look to their key players, including the very impressive Brendan Falvey, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Chris O’Leary, Wayne Sparling and veteran Peter McCarthy to steer them in the quarter finals.
“The support we receive from fans will be a huge factor and the so-called 12th man will be of significant importance on Sunday,” said Celtic chairman Paul Sherry.
