Celtic and Athletic back in action

John McDonagh came close for Celtic

ONE town. Two teams. One title.

It’s all to play for this Friday night as fierce local rivals Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic resume their battle for the Kerry District League Premier title in what promises to be an absorbing derby decider at Mounthawk Park, Tralee (7.30pm).

Last Sunday’s 0-0 stalemate was anything but a classic as both teams adopted a safety first approach but goals are expected this evening as the age-old rivals go for broke in their respective bids to win the league title and to claim local bragging rights.

With the sides having finished joint top of the table, Celtic bosses Brian Spillane and Eoin Donnellan and Athletic management team Stuart Templeman and Alan Brady have had a busy week of plotting and fine-tuning and a real tactical battle is expected before what promises to be a big crowd on a sunny last day of June evening.

Both sides had their chances – although not many – in the drawn game but the dismissal of Celtic anchor man Jamie Spillane, who was adjudged to have fouled Daithi Casey as he raced in on goal, turned the game into an even more cautious affair with no chances being taken by either side.

Before that, FAI Junior Cup semi-finalists Cetlic looked the more likely to win through on the day as they played a more attacking brand of football and came close to finding the target on a number of occasions.

Closest of all was John McDonagh whose effort in the dying stages came crashing back off the crossbar but, at the other end, Paudie Clifford had another great chance to make it an historic day for the blues but it wasn’t to be either.

It’s still all to play for and later tonight, one half of Killarney will have real cause to celebrate.
