Celebrations mark a glorious Celtic treble

Painting the town green: Killarney Celtic players celebrate the KO Cup victory at Mounthawk Park on Sunday

Newly formed Kerry FC might be struggling to make any real impact in their first season in the League of Ireland but, on the domestic scene, Killarney Celtic FC are encountering no such problems and remain the undisputed kingpins in Kerry soccer.

They clinched an unprecedented, glorious five Kerry league and cup doubles in a row at the weekend when they comfortably saw off Tralee Dynamos in a replay in Mounthawk Park.

Despite goal a goal behind after 12 minutes, Celtic went on to boss the game, leading 3-1 at the break, and they emerged 5-2 winners with the lethal Witness Odirile and Wayne Sparling both netting twice and Cathal O’Shea adding another.

This has been another incredible season for the hoops who, despite losing three key players to the new Kerry FC set-up, not only retained the Premier A title and Greyhound Bar KO Cup but they also clinched the League Cup to add to their massive haul of silverware.

The latest win sparked off great celebrations in Killarney on Sunday night as it added to their 3-1 Premier A final victory over local rivals Killarney Athletic the previous week.

What it means, in essence, is that nobody but Celtic have won the league or the cup in Kerry since 2018 and with the talent at their disposal and a very solid underage structure, they could well remain the Kings of Kerry for some time to come.

New boss Neilus Hayes and assistant manager Mikey Daly – one of the club’s co-founders – have maintained the momentum built up by previous boss Brian Spillane and Celtic are playing a very attractive brand of attractive football as they approach the golden jubilee of the formation of the club in 1976.
