There was a real cause for celebration at St Francis Special School in Beaufort where three hugely popular students graduated and praise was lavished on them, by teachers and staff, for their wonderful contribution to school life.

David Carey, Lizzie Linehan and Mícheál Connolly all came of age at the school and principal, Keith Ó Brolacháin, led the tributes.

The annual graduation ceremony is one of the highlights of the calendar year for the Beaufort school as pupils say a final farewell to teachers and their surrounds.

The three students have been attending St Francis Special School for the past six years.

A special ceremony, led by chaplain to St Mary of the Angels and St Francis School, Fr Derek, marked the occasion in the school where the motto is to enable, encourage and enrich.

“Although we’re sad to them go we are excited to see what they do in the future,” the school said in a statement.

“We wish David Lizzie and Micheál every success for the future”.

Everyone in St Francis Special School also extended a big thank you to Peter Lawless who visited recently with a very generous donation towards the school bus fund.

In August of this year Peter will begin his second attempt to sail solo, non-stop, unassisted around the world from Kilrush in Co Clare via the five great capes.

He will be using a sextant and paper charts as his primary navigation tools and, if successful, Peter will be the first Irish person to complete a solo non-stop circumnavigation of the world and the trip will take approximately eight months.

He hopes to stop and talk with schools, organisations and people along the route and share his story with them.
