He’s already a councillor but John O’Donoghue will get to contest his first election and see his name on the ballot paper for the first time next summer.
The primary school teacher was co-opted to Kerry County Council in June 2021 to fill the seat vacated by his uncle, Michael Gleeson, who retired following a long and hugely successful career in active politics.
The Muckross man had been chairman of the Kerry Independence Alliance for a two-year term up to the time of his co-option.
He has now been selected by the party to contest next year’s local elections which will be his first time on the campaign trail hustings seeking votes for himself rather than his uncle.
Cllr O’Donoghue was chosen at a well-attended party annual general meeting in the Torc Hotel in Killarney.
“I was delighted and I look forward to continuing to work for and with the people of Killarney and the wider county,” he said.
