Cancer Support Group takes top prize

ONE of Kerry’s favourite charities has been chosen as the overall winner in this year’s Kerry Community Awards.

The Kerry Cancer Support Group, which operates the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, a free daily return bus service to hospitals in Cork for cancer patients attending treatment, was honoured with the top award at a function in the Dromhall Hotel in Killarney.

The charity received a cheque for €1,500 and a perpetual trophy and 19 other finalists received presentations of either €1,000 or €500.

The winner was announced by Mayor of Kerry, Cllr John Sheahan, with Kerry County Council official John Breen as master of ceremonies and the award was accepted by Kerry Cancer Support Group administrator, Breda Dyland.

A spokesperson for the Kerry Cancer Support Group stated:” “We are humbled and delighted and would like to thank the judging committee for choosing us as the overall winner among all of the other very worthy finalists”.

The awards scheme, administered by Kerry County Council with €19,000 in prizemoney for the various category winners, recognises the work of the community and voluntary sector that seeks to improve the social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life in local communities, both urban and rural.

The awards are open to all community and voluntary groups based in the county, regardless of size or location and the criteria states that groups must assist, support or enrich their community in some way.

Judges considered a wide range of factors when assessing entries and significant focus was e placed on impact on the community and innovative approaches.

Other finalists included Tarbert Development Association, Killorglin Archive Society, Ballyduff Tidy Towns, Cromane Community Council, Caherciveen Music Festival, K-Fest Killorglin, Glenbeigh Community Council, Kingdom Wheelblasters, Mahaerrs Conservation Association and Turreencahill Community Group.
