Campaign helps flush out best practice

Elaine Doyle, Clean Coasts, with TY Killorgan Community College students

Litter, toilets, beaches and how they all connect was on the curriculum for transition year students at Killorglin Community College when the school hosted a workshop presented by the nationwide Think Before You Flush or Pour team.

The public awareness campaigns, operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Irish Water, has a main lesson to encourage people to know the difference about what to flush and what not to flush down the toilet.

It addresses the issue of flushing unsuitable items down the toilet and highlights the consequences of doing so, such as blockages in homes, wastewater network and treatment plants and how sewage related litter can impact rivers, beaches, the ocean and its marine life.

Many items such as wipes, cotton bud sticks and dental floss are flushed in error and their presence in the wastewater network affects the network itself as well as water quality.

The workshop was carried out in presentation style with interactive experiments and the message connected with other environmental work the school is carrying out.

The main message left with the students was the simple one of putting a bin in the bathroom and the plumber, neighbours and the environment will thank them for it.
