A KERRY TD has called for the immediate release of a Killarney man who has been jailed for contempt of court.

Anti-eviction campaigner Brian McCarthy (47) was committed to prison, along with Tommy Collins, of Dysart, Corofin, at Ennis Circuit Court, following a hearing concerning the Bank of Ireland’s attempts to repossess a home near Corofin.

Judge Patrick Meghen told Mr McCarthy that he would be released from prison when he purges his contempt.

Speaking today outside the Bank of Ireland in Tralee, where Kerry Sinn Féin members held a protest in support of the jailed Killarney man, Deputy Martin Ferris said: “Brian has stood shoulder to shoulder with Mr Collins who should never have been put through the ordeal of the justice system in the first place.”

He said while the taxpayer has been forced to bail out the banks, people like Mr Collins are abandoned and “thrown to the wolves” by bankers and politicians whose agenda is to protect those at the top of the ladder, to the detriment of ordinary decent people.

“We have seen very few bankers put in prison despite the social and economic catastrophe that some of them caused.

“Brian should be released immediately and be left return to his family. I have requested a visit for tomorrow with Brian from the prison authorities and I hope to see him then,” Deputy Ferris said.

Mr McCarthy previously contested the local elections in the Killarney Municipal District and secured 383 first preference votes in the 2014 poll.
