MEMBERS of the Irish Army are planning to march on Kerry.
The 95th cadet class of the Irish Defence forces will set off on a gruelling two-day trek around the Ring of Kerry this Wednesday to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society, Crumlin Medical Research facility and the Curragh Lourdes fund.
The mission will involve a distance of 180km, in full combat attire, wearing boots and carrying heavy backpacks and the 95 young men and women will undertake the venture in just over 48 hours.
The route will begin in Killarney on Wednesday where the cadets will set out in relays around the Ring of Kerry, rotating teams as they move through a series of 10km legs over the 48 hours. They will have successfully completed their mission when they arrive back in to Killarney at approximately 1 o’clock on Friday.
The 10 women and 85 men commenced over 16 months of cadet training in the Military College, The Curragh in Kildare in September 2018 and aim to be commissioned as officers in the Army and Air Corps in February 2020.
There chosen charities are the Crumlin Medical Research Foundation which provides vital funding to enable sick children to have the best possible outcomes, the Irish Cancer Society which invests in cancer research and provide care and support to people affected by the disease and the Curragh Lourdes Fund which provides assistance to sick and special needs children undergoing a biannual pilgrimage to Lourdes.
The cadets have set themselves a fundraising target of €10,000 to be divided between the three chosen causes and they have already received pledges of almost €4,000. They have launched a GoFundMe page and to make a donation go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/cadets-vs-the-ring-of-kerry
