Belfast’s Jonny Greer and Niall Burns seized the day when WRC ace Craig Breen broke a driveshaft before the final stage on a day of high drama and great racing in the Killarney Historic Rally on Saturday
Last year’s winners, Breen and Killarney’s Paul Nagle – recently retired from the WRC – were reunited to the latter’s hometown event and they became embroiled in a real battle for dominance until fate intervened and Breen and Nagle were forced to retire.
The in-form Greer and Burns, as a result, had the luxury of avoiding a last stage showdown with the WRC specialists and they powered to glory over Moll’s Gap in their Ford Sierra Cosworth.
Despite some mechanical difficulties, Killarney driver Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy finished second, for the second year running, in their Subaru Legacy RS just over 30 seconds behind the eventual winners.
The top Kerry due across the line were Fergus O’Meara and Mikey Galvin in fifth place.
