Bridge crux is ‘borderline discriminatory and obscene’

A long-standing campaign for a pedestrian footbridge to be installed to link the railway station in Killarney with the nearby bus station has been reactivated.

Killarney Municipal District Council officials have been asked to again write to Iarnród Éireann asking for accessibility to be improved through the provision of a footbridge.

Cllr John O’Donoghue, who raised the matter, said it is ludicrous to have two transport hubs in such close proximity to each other, yet not joined by a footbridge.

“From an accessibility point of view, it is borderline discriminatory and from a common sense perspective, it is obscene,” he said.

He said it was bizarre that two people could chat quite comfortably from one station to the other, yet have to walk out around by Killarney Outlet Centre to go from one to the other while very often lugging suitcases.

“In what well may be Ireland’s premier tourist destination, this is simply not good enough,” Cllr O’Donoghue said.

He asked if a disused footbridge stored by Kerry County Council in Killarney could be used but officials said it was not suitable for that purpose and it is required as part of the council’s emergency response strategy.

The council said it is having ongoing discussions with Irish Rail and Bus Éireann regarding accessibility solutions between the rail and bus stations.
