Brendan’s voyage to great sports photography

A STUNNING image showing the white heat of battle during a top level hurling match has earned a prestigious international award for a talented Kerry photographer.

Bremdan Moran, from Tralee, has won the Sports Action category in a competition run by the Pictures of the Year International organisation which promotes the work of documentary photographers as well as magazine, newspaper and independent photojournalists.

Brendan was in the right place at the right time to capture the toil, sweat and grit of battle in the All-Ireland Final between Kilkenny and Tipperary and his all-action image of a full-on tackle more than impressed the adjudicators.

Brendan works with the Dublin based specialist sports photo agency Sportsfile and he is widely acknowledged as one of the best sports photographers of his generation.

He reacted to the award on Twitter by commenting: “Nice to get some pretty cool news”.

Last year the Tralee man was honoured with a GAA MacNamee Best Photograph Award for a superbly atmospheric image he captured at the close of the 2018 All-Ireland hurling final.

Brendan has had a keen interest in photography from a very young age and started out as a young freelance in Tralee, covering local sports and news events for local publications. He later opted to specialise in sports and he has covered Olympic Games, World Cups, Six Nations games and all of the major GAA fixtures.
