YOU’D never know there’s a general election on the horizon.
Unless, of course, you have cause to travel the main road from Killarney to Cork.
Never one to miss an opportunity, Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin is getting his message across loud and clear to his constituents.
And he’s not backward about coming forward to claim credit for some major infrastructural improvements on a long list of pre-election promises made by the coalition – including a desperately needed Macroom bypass.
The South Kerry politician has erected a giant roadside banner advising motorists that there are “road works ahead” on the notorious N22. Just how far ahead, he doesn’t specify but the impression given is that he had a big part to play in securing the cash for the job.
The over-sized message – in the traditional amber of roadwork signage – even features a snapshot of a smiling Brendan who’s looking delighted with himself for a job well done. And why wouldn’t he be?
Some see it as a clever electioneering stunt that is sure to attract the attention of passers-by and enhance his public profile.
Others consider it to be an offensive form of roadside litter that might distract motorists as they go about their journey.
It is unclear whether or not planning permission was required for the sign but it if was, we’re sure Brendan’s political opponents will be quick to point that out in due course.
But fret not. When it comes to shortening the travel time from Killarney to Cork, we’re all on the one road. But it might be a long road.
