Blow for Kerry as young star goes down under

Stefan Okunbor is heading down under

PETER Keane will have to plan without one of the top rising stars in Kerry football as he plots his first season in charge of the Kerry senior side.

The swashbuckling Stefan Okunbor, (20), one of the hottest properties in the game, is set to join Aussie Rules side Geelong Cats on a two-year Rookie contract

The Munster Under 20 Player of the Year, who was the stand-our players in Kerry’s run to the All-Ireland semi-final, under Jack O’Connor, was more than ready to step up to the senior ranks and could have easily filled the problematic full back spot or slotted in at midfield.

Instead the athletic Na Gaeil star, who helped his club gain promotion to the top flight of the Kerry County League and to the County Junior Club Final, will join fellow Kerry player Mark O’Connor at Geelong.

Okunbor, who is blessed with great pace and strength and is a fine fielder, won an All-Ireland minor medal with Kerry in 2016.
