HUNDREDS of young footballers took the field at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney to showcase their skills for the annual Garda Primary School 7-A-Side Blitz and, in the process, they paid tribute to a young footballer who passed away last year following an illness.

Now in its 15th year, the blitz is organised by Garda Eddie Walsh, a mentor with the Kerry senior team, and it attracted a total of 18 teams from schools throughout Kerry and Cork.
The overall winners were Lissivigeen National School who defeated Duagh National School in the final.
The blitz was dedicated to the memory of Niall McGillycuddy from Killarney who passed away last October at the age of 16.

Niall was an outstanding sportsman who excelled in so many codes, including football, soccer and basketball, representing his club, his school and his county.
A stand-out underage star with Killarney Legion, he also played football for the Presentation Monastery, St Brendan’s College and Kerry.
Members of Niall’s family were in Fitzgerald Stadium to attend the blitz.
