HE has been so active in sports clubs and community affairs for so many years that people could be forgiven for thinking that he has been around forever.

But, if life begins at 50, then there’s still a whole lot more for Killarney businessman Niall O’Callaghan to achieve in the years ahead.

He reached the magical half a century milestone this week and he was taken by surprise when his Dr Crokes GAA club pals sprang a surprise celebration to mark the occasion.

Perhaps for the first time in his life, he was almost left speechless when a cake and birthday balloons were produced in the Lewis Road clubhouse as he sat down for a game of progressive 31 at a weekly card school organised by black and amber stalwart Fr Paddy O’Donoghue.

A busy man, Niall, of course, is a selector with the Dr Crokes senior team and he is also very actively involved with St Paul’s Basketball Club, Killarney Celtic FC and several other sporting organisations and he previously had a very demanding role looking after the day to day logistics for members of the Kerry senior football panel.

Niall is married to Cathy and they have two children. He is also an elected member of Kerry County Council and serves as an independent on Killarney Municipal District Council and that is all in addition to running the family business, The Fáilte Bar and Restaurant, with his brother Paudie and their mum Eileen.
