THERE was no new case of Covid-19 reported in Kerry this Thursday with the number of confirmed infections in the county remaining at 302.

Nationally, there have been 29 new deaths confirmed, bringing the total to 1,403 with 137 new cases reported today and that brings the total number of people infected with the virus to 22,385.

The Health Service Executive is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

As of Tuesday night last, 6,473 health care workers were confirmed as testing positive for coronavirus with 73 per cent of those female and 33 per cent employed as nurses.

With the reproduction number now between 0.5 and 0.6, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, remarked: “We have achieved our goal of suppressing the spread of the disease”.

He added: “It was not easy for anyone but there is no question that our collective effort has saved lives.”

But Dr Holohan cautioned that the pattern of Covid-19 going forward must be examined closely attempts are made to ease restrictions.

“These weeks are just as important as the first weeks of our response. Our behaviour is crucial in maintaining our progress and keeping the reproduction number below one,” he cautioned.

The number of new cases, deaths and admissions to intensive care units is now falling and has been for over a week due mainly to a reduction of transmission of the virus in the community.
