Beaufort junction: No-one is adhering to the speed limit

Concern has been voiced about safety at the junction leading from Beaufort Bridge on to the main N72 Killarney-Killorglin road.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, said traffic calming measures are required there as speed limits are not being adhered to.

“Accidents and near misses are a common occurrence,” she stated, asking for an update on what the council intends to do about it.

Cllr Brendan Cronin insisted: “No-one is adhering to the speed limit”.

He said the visibility for drivers trying to exit from the Beaufort side on to the main road is nil.

“We need to slow people down,” Cllr Cronin said.

Cllr Martin Grady said the exit from Lahard Cross – known locally as the concealed turn – on to the road just around the corner from the junction was also a significant problem and it was very difficult for drivers to see what is coming from the Killorglin direction.

“We need to push back the speed limit further to take traffic at Lahard Cross into consideration,” he said

Senior Kerry County Council engineer, Paul Curry, said, however, that the junction has not been registered as an area of concern but the 60kph zone remains under observation by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

“If there is a speeding problem it will be brought to the attention of the Garda Traffic Corps,” he said.

The council meeting at which the matter was raised heard that there is a 60kph speed limit at the junction but the road signage will be examined to establish if improvements are required.
