Kerry has been warned not get complacent about the South Kerry greenway just because the legal obstacles to the project have been surmounted.

Cllr Michael Cahill has called for all ancillary works, public toilets, parking and safe entry and exit points to be put in place at the start and finish of the route in Glenbeigh as far as Renard Point.

“When developing a world class project, no cost should be spared and this should apply big time to the South Kerry greenway,” he said.

Cllr Michael Cahill: Be greenway ready

“We must develop the entry and exit points to be prepared for secure car and bicycle parking and safe flow through access and we must take account of local requirements,” said Cllr Cahill who is the Deputy Mayor of Kerry.

He said both ends of the greenway, for different reasons, are already under pressure traffic wise before the additional footfall that the facility will create.

“We must prepare now in order to be in a position to cater for the huge numbers of people who will wish to avail of this fantastic facility on a daily basis,” said Cllr Cahill.

“It would be silly not to get working on all these preparations straight away.”

Cllr Cahill said Irish Water also needs to be prepared for Kerry’s biggest ever tourism project by providing a new sewerage scheme in Glenbeigh as the existing one is at capacity and planning applications continue to be refused.

The same applies to the extension of the Caherciveen sewerage scheme to Renard Point, he stressed.

“From the beginning, I have called for all ancillary works and accommodations to be put in place for landowners and the exact same should be done for greenway users, passing and local traffic as well. We must get greenway ready,” said Cllr Cahill who has been a staunch supporter of the project.
