The Maharees Conservation Association won the inaugural Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh Award which recognises an event that showcased an element of intangible cultural heritage.

Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh: Award in his memory

The awards ceremony, at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, heard that the Maharees group held an event that included a currach-making demonstration with the O’Leary family who have made currachs for five generations.

Attendees learned how currachs connected and sustained the communities living in Maharees and around the Tralee Bay area as they were the only way to and from the inhabited Oileán tSeannaigh and also the islands used for grazing off the coast.

The National Heritage Awards recognises the enormous contribution of individuals and community groups across Ireland in ensuring the preservation, protection, and promotion of Ireland’s built, natural and cultural heritage.
