Athletes hit the streets with great gusto

A total of 1,000 athletes entered the sold-out streets of Killarney 5-mile race on Good Friday and Mayor of Killarney Cllr Maura Healy-Rae was the official starter at Killarney House and Gardens.

Runners from the USA, UK, Europe and from most counties in Ireland took part and Killarney Valley AC, the host club, created a wonderful race atmosphere with 100 volunteers ensuring it was a professional and top-class event.

Almost 2,000 spectators at various points on the route and the finish line was on Beech Road.

Battling it out at the front of the race were Conor Kissane and Grace O’Meara, both of Killarney Valley AC. and they both finished in fourth place in their respective categories.

The winners were presented with their prizes by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, assisted by club president Eileen Switzer and sponsor, pharmacist Eoin Reen,

An online fundraising appeal was organised through the Athletics Association of Ireland in tandem with the event to create awareness of cancer and cancer research on behalf of Killarney man Ciaran Brosnan.

Both Ciaran and his wife Charlene took part in the event receiving massive support along the way.

Due to the generous sponsorship of the event and participation of all, a sizeable sum has been raised to assist the viability of the athletics track in the town and future repair campaign which has commenced.

1st: Paul Moloney Mallow AC: 24.59
2nd: Kenneth Rodger St John’s AC:  25.10
3rd: Gavin Sweeney Togher AC: 25.26

Women’s result:
1st: Amy Pollman Daamen An Riocht AC: 29.20
2nd: Carol Finn Leevale AC:  29.30
3rd: Lily Riordan Star of the Laune AC: 29.37
