At last, sewerage scheme nears completion

The plans for the Kilcummin sewerage scheme

The long-running Kilcummin sewerage scheme saga, dogged by problems for over two years, is now in its final stages of completion as customers have been provided with a pathway to connect to the new network.

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae has welcomed recent news from Uisce Éireann that the project has been advanced very significantly.

The works that have been completed include the installation of a sewer network, the construction of a pumping station at Pairc Chuimin, the construction of a short rising main and a gravity sewer to deliver the wastewater from Kilcummin to the collection network in Killarney for treatment at the waste water treatment plant.

“I’m delighted that this project, which was so badly needing for such a long time, is now near completion,” Minister Healy-Rae stated.

“It has been a slow process in many ways over the last 24 months but I’m glad to say that the substantial amount of the work has now been completed and I’m happy to have played my role with some of the interested parties and Irish Water,” he added.

Minister Healy-Rae also thanked the people of Kilcummin for their patience over the two years during which road closures were needed and a traffic management plan was out in place.

The new sewer collection system for Kilcummin village will reduce the reliance on on-site treatment systems such as septic tanks and package treatment plants.
