A KERRY nun who has devoted her life to helping those in need has been honoured by the Catholic Church.
Sr Consolio Fitzgerald (79) was presented with the St Patrick’s Mercy Medal by the Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin, at a special ceremony in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh on Saturday evening.
Dr Martin said he has been overwhelmed by the stories and examples of goodness and kindness he has heard of individuals who put mercy into practice in their daily lives.
Sr Consilio, a native of Brosna and a member of the Mercy Order, and Trócaire director, Éamonn Meehan, received St Patrick’s medals.
The Archbishop said Sr Consilio had shown such powerful leadership at Cuan Mhuire centres all over the country.
“They reach out to women and men with addictions, particularly to alcohol and drugs – it is truly a work of God’s mercy. Cuan Mhuire provides a space where people can humbly admit their need for help and support and for grace outside of themselves to put their lives back together again,” he said.
Archbishop Martin said Sr Consilio and Éamonn Meehan were receiving the medals on behalf of the hundreds, thousands of people who are doing the work of mercy every day, often without any recognition or praise.
Meanwhile, an evening of prayer and reflection to celebrate the life and work of Mother Teresa will be held in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney on Friday night next at 7.30pm.
The guest speaker will be Susan Conroy, a US based friend of Mother Teresa who has penned three books about the new saint. The event will include prayer, music, book signings and refreshments.
