A fundraising campaign has been initiated to help finance a specialist medical flight to bring a popular Killarney man home after he fell seriously ill while on holiday.
Paul Cotter, who operates the busy Chapel Café on the course at Killarney Golf Club, became unwell last Friday while on vacation in Lanzarote with his wife, Sheila.
He was admitted to hospital in a critical condition and was later airlifted to a bigger facility Gran Canaria for specialist treatment.
Paul is now deemed sufficiently stable to travel home on a specialised medi-flight but it is understood that time is of the essence and medical staff say the journey needs to be undertaken in a matter of days or he will need to remain in Gran Canaria to undergo treatment for a long period of time.

His family said the insurance company has been slow to respond which, given the urgency of the situation, is very concerning and they are worried that access to the required flight could be denied.
Family friends have now set up a gofundme appeal to raise the €50,000 required to cover the air ambulance flight and, on behalf of the Cotter family, they have expressed heartfelt gratitude to anyone that has donated.
‘For those of us that know Paul personally, we all know what a kind caring man he is and he would be the first to offer help, as he has so many times before, to those in need of it,” said Michelle and Jason Spillane who started the appeal.
“Paul is greatly loved by his many family and friends, especially his five grandchildren who all adore him.
“We will continue to keep Paul in our prayers and, please God, we will have him home safe and well as soon as possible,” they said.
Popular Paul Cotter has been running the Chapel Café for over 15 years and it is a great pit-stop for golfers to stop and refuel for the final few holes.
