All of Kerry would benefit from the proposed development of Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney as it would significantly increase the number of visitors to the county, Fianna Fail general election candidate, Michael Cahill, has suggested.
He said the number of additional visitors that a modernised sports stadium and outdoor concert venue would attract would extend the tourist season for businesses throughout the county.

The stadium committee has outlined plans for a €74 million redevelopment of the famous grounds, pending government support.
“We must all get behind the proposed development of Fitzgerald Stadium which would be capable of hosting many different sporting codes at international level, as well as being a top class open-air concert venue,” Cllr Cahill said.
The knock-on business to the rest of the county would have the effect of extending the season for everybody working in tourism Industry, he maintained.
“As well as top GAA fixtures, international soccer and rugby could be staged there with music concerts also possible. It would be a proud boast to say that this year I saw Oasis, Real Madrid and the All-Blacks play in Killarney,” said Cllr Cahill.
He said he would also favour the inclusion of a sports museum in the proposed plans for Fitzgerald Stadium to highlight all of the achievements of Kerry women and men over the years, predominantly but not alone in GAA activities.
This is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to our sport’s heroines and heroes and it also would be of enormous interest to local and visiting sports enthusiasts,” he remarked.
