A CONTROVERSIAL social media page which had infuriated the business community in Killarney, leading to the threat of legal action, has been removed from Facebook.
The site which slated several Killarney businesses and made highly personalised comments about employers, had sparked an angry backlash in the town with business leaders demanding that it be removed.
The page – ‘100 places not to work in Killarney’ – made potentially damaging and unsubstantiated comments about a number of businesses, mainly in the hospitality and retail sector.
It included bizarre claims of illegal employment practices, bulling, intimidation and even slavery against employers without any evidence to back-up the sweeping allegations.
The creator of the page remained anonymous at all times. There was a mobile telephone contact listed at the top of the page but when KillarneyToday.com called the number on several occasions, a pre-recorded message said it was not in service, fuelling suspicions that the site was malicious.
At least two employers contacted Facebook to make a formal complaint and to demand that the site be removed.
Another Killarney business instructed a firm of solicitors to take legal action to ensure the site was taken down.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also formally wrote to Facebook’s international headquarters in Dublin to ask for the site to be removed.
