Killarney was greatly saddened by the sudden passing of Angela Barry, a hugely popular primary school teacher who enjoyed a very distinguished career in the classroom and educated a whole generation of local boys in the Presentation Monastery.
Née Hearne from High Street, where her parents operated a bicycle repair business and popular sweet shop, Angela is fondly remembered as a great teacher who was a gentle, compassionate and witty personality at the head of the classroom.
She retired in 2009 after a 40-year career during which time she worked with a number of principals, including Br Angelus, Br Conrad, Br Justin and Derry Pyne.
In a moving online tribute, the staff at the Presentation Monastery recalled that Angela was the first female teacher in the Mon when she began working there in 1969 and spent over 40 years educating the boys of Killarney.
“She always maintained a great interest in the school and would often enquire after the boys when staff met her cycling or walking around the Demesne, even as late as last Thursday evening,” the staff said.

“The news of her passing was greeted with shock and sadness as we recalled stories and memories of her kindness and lovely sense of humour as a colleague and her caring nature as a teacher,” they added.
Angela is also remembered with fondness at Gaelscoil Faithleann through her involvement as a shared visiting special needs teacher for a number of years.
Angela, who lived at Woodlawn Park, is survived by her husband Nicky, sons Ross and Roy. daughters-in-law Christina and Holly and her much loved grandchildren Niclas, Henry, Niamh, Owen, Sean and the late Sophia.
She is further survived by her sisters Paula Fitzsimons and Liz Hearne, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
