Aldi to replace existing facility with bigger building

The existing Aldo store at Deerpark, Killarney

RETAIL giant Aldi has received approval to build a new store in Killarney that will eventually replace the existing facility at Deerpark.

As revealed by KillarneyToday.com last April, the company had submitted an application to Kerry County Council’s planning department seeking permission for the construction of a discount foodstore and off licence, as well as two separate retail units, in the townland of Ardshanavooley on Park Road.

The 2.4-acre site is very close to the existing Aldi store at Deerpark on land owned by a well-known local family.

Breaking: KillarneyToday.com’s report last April

The 1,725sqm building, with an additional 247sqm in the two separate retail units, is due to be completed by 2020 and the company says it will replace the existing smaller store which runs to 1,345sqm and is 2050m to the north of the proposed site.

The application also includes a car park with spaces for 113 vehicles, a loading bay, external plant enclosure, a substation and switch-room and bicycle stands. The car park will incorporate five parent and child spaces and four parking slots for drivers with a disability.

The proposed development by the German owned global supermarket chain would also include new vehicular and pedestrian access from Arbutus Drive as well as pedestrian access from Park Road.

Aldi entered the Irish market in 1999 and now boasts a network of over 120 stores across the country with plans to open several more.
