A SUPER player who starred in Killarney Celtic’s league and cup double last season has been snapped up by a League of Ireland club.
Matt Keane has signed for Limerick outfit Treaty United FC and, although he will be greatly missed by the Killarney club, his former team-mates and managers have wished him well.
Treaty have also signed Matt’s Celtic team-mate Shane Lowth who joined the Killarney club from Tralee Dynamos last season.
Matt has been a constant presence in the Celtic first team at all grades and he was widely regarded as one of the stand-out players in Kerry soccer.
Also a Gaelic footballer of renown, he was part of the Kilcummin side that won the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship title in Croke Park in 2019.
Matt, a secondary school teacher, has also been involved with Celtic in a coaching capacity and he was the astute manager of the youths squad that won the national cup last season.
“Matt has a fantastic understanding of the game and how it should be played. He will be sorely missed but we have no doubt he will be a huge success at his new club,” said Celtic Chairman Paul Sherry.
“Killarney Celtic’s loss is Treaty United’s gain. Matt was one of the best midfield mechanics in junior soccer in the country,” he added.
Celtic has also wished Shane Lowth well on his big move and the club said the Tralee man has a big future in the League of Ireland.
“Shane has a fantastic attitude, work ethic and a hunger to constantly improve his game which will stand him in good stead,” said Paul Sherry.
Treaty United FA will play in the first division of the League of Ireland this season and their opponents will include Cork City and Bray Wanderers.
